Mayapa-u Budj Bim
The Budj Bim creation story, told by the Gunditjmara people of Western Victoria, Australia, describes an ancestral being named Budj Bim who transformed into a volcano, with his body becoming the mountain known as Budj Bim (also called Mount Eccles) and his teeth erupting as lava, creating the surrounding landscape, including the wetlands that are crucial to their culture; this story is believed to be based on a real volcanic eruption that occurred around 37,000 years ago, making it potentially one of the oldest stories ever told.
Mayapa-a Budj Bim is an important story that connects the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape through Dhauwurd Wurrung language for the continuing connection to Gunditjmara country from our ancient ancestors to our community today and into our future.
