Animation Direction:
Managing small teams of creative professionals to meet aesthetic and narrative requirements on projects that are often culturally sensitive. Dedicated to understanding every aspect of the narrative and animation pipeline; look development, storyboarding, asset creation, animation, rendering and post-production, to ensure comprehensive and consistent results.
Assets & Environments:
A wide range of experience with character design, hard surface and organic modelling, texturing and rigging of humans and animals; anatomic and stylised, quadrupeds, birds and the unconventional. An eye for detail in digitally recreating existing and non-existing environments. A flare for creating original environments with a particular focus on light and colour.
Animation:
Experience with varied animation approaches both realistic and exaggerated as well as motion-capture acting and clean-up. A keen focus in regards to character facial animation and lip-syncing.
Rendering & Post-Production:
A vast understanding of the theories and practicalities of digital rendering. Focus on achieving high aesthetic standards whilst maintaining realistic render times for production. Experience with many aspects of post-production; colour correction, dynamic simulation, masking and layer composition.
Education:
A focused and nurturing approach to teaching, utilising twelve years of animation experience in small team productions, creating strong practical foundations which students can then build upon and take in their own directions.
Future Learning:
Dedicated to personal development and up-skilling. A strong interest in developing real-time engine skills, particularly environment and world building in Unreal Engine, as well as furthering my current understanding of digital dynamic effects moving into Houdini, particularly large scale simulated water effects.
Animation Director / Wunungu Awara Animated Series
MONTH 2019 - OCTOBER 2023, MELBOURNE, BYRON BAY & REMOTE
The Wunungu Awara Animated Series was the second incarnation of the Monash Country-Lines Archive (2011-2018), which aimed to create a broadcast ready series of animated episodes depicting Australian Indigenous Knowledge from around the country, including traditional and contemporary narratives, songs and poems.
As Animation Director my primary role was managing a small team of digital artists in the production of animated episodes, overseeing the whole pipeline from look-development, storyboarding, asset creation, animation, visual effects, rendering and post-production.
My role at Wunungu Awara also included collaborating directly with indigenous community members in the depiction and execution of their cultural knowledge, as well as communication with any Anthropologist, Archaeologist, Museum Archivists and Linguists that were also involved with the participating communities.
A highlight from my Wunungu Awara experience was winning the Yoram Gross Award for Best Australian Animated Short Film at FlickerFest 2024 at Bondi Beach for “Duwarra Wujara” as Co-Director.
Unfortunately the Wunungu Awara project was cancelled prior to series completion, though close to two hours of completed content was created.
